Byheck's "N" Scale Products
Home Page

Over the past 40+ years, I have created several Model Railroad "N" Scale {1/160} detail Items.  These items were first developed for use on our former very large "N" Scale rail system, which took up most of my brother's basement.   Several years ago our rail road empire was dismantled, and we each kept a portion of the layout, rolling stock, buildings, and scenery items.   I had always hoped to once again have a large "N" Scale layout, however I have had little time, or the extra money to begin such a large undertaking.

However, I did continue to create a variety "N" Scale Farm Equipment including:
Building & Detail items: Barn, machine shed, equipment dealership, etc;
Ground Preparation items: disc, drags, Planters, plows, etc;
Harvesting items:
balers, Choppers,
combines, sicklebar mowers, hay rakes,  variety of wagons, etc;

I also continued to create other items for N Scale which include:
Business items:
Buildings, Stack of Lumber, palleted Bricks, Palleted Crates, and Vehicles
Military vehicles: Jeeps, HalfTracks, Semis and Tanks

Many of my pieces began in my head.  As a youngest I spent time during the summer on one of several uncles’ farms, working in their fields: hay crop, cultivating corn, combining oats, straw crop, wood cutting, and cleaning out barns (hogs and or dairy).  Mostly I operated with the old WD or WC
Allis-Chalmers (orange tractors), though I did also use International Harvester [Farmal / McCormick] (red tractors), and John Deere (green tractors) from time to time.  My research for most items (besides my fading memory) comes from the internet searches, and visits to various farming supply stores or several farms themselves.  It was surprising how I found a variety of small pieces that resembled the various parts of my machinery, though it did take a lot of imagination and time to make these parts come together.

I began with lot of smaller items found in hobby and crafts stores, which looked about the right scale.  Then I began piecing things together, until I had the correct look adding some detail by fine craving in Balsa wood or soft plastic.  From there I began experimenting with rubber molds and resin.  Making a mold, pouring same and the fine tuning the item some more.  After several attempts, my pieces started to come to life and I just continued looking for and creating more pieces as I went along.  I decided on my three color schemes (Green, Orange, and Red) and kept going.  My buildings are basically my own design, carved from Balsa Wood or other soft material and adding details as I went along.  I have used various computer programs to make several buildings but prefer the carving technique for most items.   My signage is also mainly from these computer programs.

Carving most of these items is a very time consuming practice, as one little slip and the project is ruined.  Over the years I have learned to mold the item several times as I go along so mistakes don’t totally ruin a project.  You will notice that my tires and wheels on most items are foam rubber (punched out with various sized punches from different thickness of foam sheets), while other larger wheels are casted resin.  Once I came across these methods I tended to repeat their usage on more and more items.  With soft wood carvings, I have found the need to fill-in areas with modeling putty or plaster in order to be able to make more detailed carvings.  Once a have the various pieces for a particular piece just the way I want them, I create a mold containing several of each piece for my product and begin repeated pouring until I have enough of the product.   After assembly, I paint the basic unit, then add more detail (wheels etc) until I have sort of an assembly line going.  During the warmer months (preferred) I do my spray painting outdoors and finish up the detailing in my work shop.  During the cooler months I tend to spend more time developing new ideas or refining older pieces.

I am now offering for sale (via E-Bay cb475fg) many of these items.  Some will be listed in the Auction format, however, most will be in the Buy-It-Now format.  Look for my items {most of my items begin with N Scale Farm  or  N Scale Military  or  N Scale Business} listed in
